YOU SAW IT HERE FIRST: A Rockland County man standing on a corner in Ridgewood was seriously injured when he was struck and thrown nearly 20 feet by a car whose driver apparently swerved to avoid another motorist who ran a stop sign.

Police were looking for the driver of the other car, who they said may have hopped out and fled on foot.

The Saddle Brook woman’s car continued on after hitting the pedestrian at South Maple Avenue and Dayton Street and rammed into a utility pole, releasing the steering wheel airbag.

She appeared fine.

The 50-something pedestrian, meanwhile, was conscious and alert as he was placed into an ambulance that took him to the trauma unit of St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Paterson.

The Bergen County Sheriff’s Office’s Bureau of Criminal Identification collected evidence. Also at the scene was the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Accident Investigation Unit.

The woman told police the driver of a dark-colored Nissan turned south onto Maple, cutting her off.

As she swerved, she said, she lost control of her Hyundai, which hit the man and then the telephone pole.

Witnesses corroborated her statement, Ridgewood Police Chief John Ward said.

Responding were Ridgewood police, firefighters and EMS workers.

South Maple Avenue between Ridgewood Avenue and Spring Avenue was closed in both directions while the accident was investigated.
