RIDGEWOOD, N.J. -- A Ridgewood man lost $4,600 in a Craiglist Jersey Shore rental scam, said village police who urged residents to be cautious in their online dealings.
After asking about the Beach Haven property on Long Beach Island, the South Maple Avenue resident said he got an email from someone claiming to represent the Brant Beach House Rental Agency, Police Chief Jacqueline Luthcke said.
The purported representative had him complete a rental agreement by email and deposit 50% of the total cost into a Bank of America account in February, Luthcke said.
Five months later, the victim said, he got an email request for the other $2,300 -- but was told "to deposit the money into a different account than the original," the chief said.
He "became suspicious and located the property owner who reported the property is privately owned and not a rental property," she said.
"The property owner reported similar incidents have happened multiple times this year and she has posted listings on Craigslist attempting to warn people of the scam," Luthcke said.
Her detectives were investigating.
