The unidentified vessel -- possibly a ski boat-- hit the 18-foot Bayliner boat in the stern and became airborne, flying over it, just north of Sportsmans Marina around 8:30 p.m., the NJ State Police said.

"At this time, investigators do not believe the suspect boat had an outboard motor," they said.

Owner and operator Edwin Lane, 72, of West Milford and his passenger, Robert Roon, 76, of Newfoundland were flown by medical choppers to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson, State Police said.

Passengers Mary Lane, 74, and Eileen Roon, 70, sustained non-life-threatening injuries but were able to render immediate aid to their husbands and navigate the boat back to dock, they said.

They were taken by ambulance to the hospital with minor injuries.

State Police searched the area in vain for whomever was responsible.

Anyone with information that could help the investigation is asked to contact Trooper Shane Diehl of the NJSP Carteret station: (732) 541-0491. Callers can remain anonymous.
