Ridgewood Police issued this report on Thursday, Nov. 17: On November 14, 2011 at 5:34 PM the Ridgewood Police responded to a report of a child struck by a motor vehicle on Overbrook Road. The accident occurred in the driveway of 420 Overbrook Road.
A vehicle driven by Mirjam Kaiser, 24, of Ridgewood, drove up the driveway of 426 Overbrook Road and crossed the grass to go around a vehicle parked in the driveway.
The 6 year old female was playing in front of the parked vehicle and was struck. The victim was transported to the Valley Hospital by the Ridgewood Ambulance Corp. The victim was pronounced dead on the way to the hospital.
No charges have been filed at this time and the investigation is ongoing.
Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli confirmed for CLIFFVIEW PILOT that his Fatal Accident Unit was assisting police in assembling the details. The Bergen County Sheriff’s Department’s Bureau of Criminal Identification was at the scene Monday night, as well.
Molinelli just before midnight called it a “tragic accident that has not been classified as anything other than that at this time.”
Although Dr. Lorna Oates-Santos, principal of the Somerville School, sent parents an automated message Monday night with the “tragic news,” the PILOT is not publishing the first-grader’s name or the name of the homeowner whose property the youngster was killed on.
Widespread publication of the child’s name, or of the property owner’s, doesn’t serve any greater good.
Both families are now grieving an unimaginable loss.
