Quick response kept the blaze from spreading to adjoining businesses at the Village Shopping Center on Maple Avenue, village Fire Capt. Greg Hillerman said.

"Those types of buildings are notorious for fires spreading," he told Daily Voice.

Firefighters who arrived shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday found flames "blowing three to four feet" from the rear of La Bella Pizza, said Hillerman. They had the fire under control in under 50 minutes, he said.

The blaze burned through the rear window and caused temperature fractures in the front window, Hillerman said.

Adjoining businesses sustained smoke damage, the captain said. Some food inventory was lost after the power was cut, he said.

An electrical short in the back of the store was responsible, the Bergen County Prosecutor's Arson Investigation Unit found.

The Ho-Ho-Kus and Glen Rock fire departments also responded.
