RIDGEWOOD, N.J. -- Marion D. (Dallery) Kortjohn, a longtime Ridgewood resident, died on Sunday, March 12. She was 101.
Born and raised in the Bronx, she lived in Ridgewood for over 60 years. She was a Mensa member, a graduate of Hunter College and Columbia University, and before she retired, she was director of Student Activities for Kean University.
Maria Perez, a former Kean student who is now a professional staff member there, remembered that Kortjohn was "always impeccably dressed ... I marveled at that attention to outfit detail." In particular, she had a collection of gloves -- many that were white -- that she wore to complement her outfits.
Another characterized her as a "grand lady."
Other former students and colleagues fondly remembered the organized chaos that was her office. "I realize that my own notoriously messy office is a tribute to her," Al Schaefer said.
"She would have piles of papers all around her office but knew specifically where everything was," Tom O'Donnell added.
Kortjohn was also president of the St. Margaret’s Guild at Christ Church in Ridgewood, and she was a board member of the Ridgewood YMCA for many years. She Kortjohn was also a member of the Woman's Club of Ridgewood, the College Club of Ridgewood and the Saddle River Garden Club.
She is survived by her son, Martin, and her grandsons, Martin and Matthew. She was predeceased by her husband, Martin, and her daughter, Marion Anne.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 18, at the Christ Church, 105 Cottage Place, in Ridgewood. Memorial donations can be made to the church.
C.C. Van Emburgh Funeral Home, in Ridgewood, assisted with arrangements.
