RIDGEWOOD, N.J.– The Ridgewood Council will vote Wednesday on the fates of two huge changes to the village landscape -- a parking garage and high-density housing -- following what's expected to be a lengthy combined public hearing this Wednesday night.

The matters require four and three "yes" votes, respectively, from the five-member council to pass.

One would have the village bond $11.5 million for a multi-level Hudson Street parking facility -- as opposed to allowing the Bergen County Improvement to build the garage and lease it back to the village..

The other would welcome the construction of multi-family housing and retail throughout the downtown area

Officials will suspend the regular order of business during the 7:30 p.m work session for the public hearing on both matters.

"Given the magnitude and locally historic nature of both issues, I am not happy about holding two such major votes on the same night," Councilman Michael Sedon told Daily Voice. "It is vastly unfair to residents and village employees to force them to sit through this marathon meeting."

Following several extensions from the Bergen County Superior Court, the affordable housing plan must be submitted by March 31, Mayor Paul Aronsohn said.

The parking garage bond ordinance was introduced and passed unanimously on March 2.

"Both issues are very important. Both issues have benefitted from years of studies and public input. Both issues are ready for decision," Aronsohn told Daily Voice.

The venue was changed from Village Hall to Ridgewood High School's Campus Center (627 E. Ridgewood Avenue) to accommodate the expected turnout.
