"Posting student artwork online is an innovative way to showcase a large variety and number of art creations," Hyer said.

"I most especially love that parents now have an opportunity to view weekly 'pins' of artwork and stay connected to what is happening in the art studio," the 17-year teaching veteran said.

Hyer began posting on the website in the fall of 2014, displaying artwork by her sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students at Benjamin Franklin Middle School.

The BFMS gallery consists of two- and three-dimensional drawings, paintings, collages, and sculptures.

"I have also created online bulletin boards on my Pinterest page that I teach my students from," she said. "The boards consist of: art history exemplars, individual elements of arts and principles of design boards, multicultural art, art styles, art techniques, meditation and art, food creativity, interior design, nature, upcycling, and a wide variety of boards that support all of the lessons."

Hyer grew up in Fair Lawn and was a member of her high school's cover band, The Boptones. She now resides in Mahwah.

Hyer began her teaching career at BFMS as a leave replacement.

She was offered positions in three different districts, but chose Ridgewood High School.

"I missed being away from my middle school students because I felt a deep responsibility to teach more than art, which includes the important social emotional aspects of middle school growth," she said.

So after a year, Hyer returned to Ben Franklin.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed shaping thousands of children by nurturing their creative intelligence and supporting them to build overall confidence in their creative abilities," Hyer said.
