RIDGEWOOD, N.J. -- Students at the Benjamin Franklin Middle School in Ridgewood are participating in Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno's "Rock Your Socks" competition.

The school's involvement came after Ridgewood High School accepted Guadagno's challenge and pledged 1,750 pairs of new socks, and in return challenged BFMS.

The middle school pledged to collect 2,000 pairs of new socks. More than 1,400 have already been collected. The competition ends Friday.

The initiative benefits the Covenant House, an organization that provides food, shelter, and other services to homeless, runaway and trafficked youth between the ages of 18 and 21, according to a press release.

Socks are often overlooked during donation drives, so Lt. Governor Guadagno asked several New Jersey schools to engage in a friendly contest to raise awareness for the charity and get involved in their community, the press release says.
