RIDGEWOOD, N.J. -- A Waldwick driver's dashboard camera captured video of a speeding motorist blowing a red light and coming close to hitting a pair of pedestrians in a Ridgewood crosswalk.

"I only wish my camera could have picked up the [license] plate," said Russell Hauptman, who recorded the incident at North Maple and East Ridgewood avenues around 5 p.m. Thursday.

Because it didn't, Hauptman considered it more "a cautionary tale" than reason to report it to police.

"People need to pay more attention," he said. "Everyone is in a giant rush."

Posted signs in the village's commercial district remind drivers that they are to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks.

Failing to do so can cost $200 in fines, plus court costs, as well as two points off your driver's license and the possibility of a 15-day community service sentence.

Then there are the insurance surcharges, which ordinarily last a minimum of three years.

And that's not even counting the charges for running a red light.
