The call of a man “dumping the contents of several purses onto the ground in the area of Division Avenue near Route 17 South” came in to police at 9:40 a.m. Friday, Police Chief Thomas Nielsen said.
The caller led police to a red Nissan Altima with Pennsylvania license plates stopped moments later by Lt. Thomas Negro, along with Officers James Ross and Jonathan Rood, Nielsen said.
In addition to the purses, 30-year-old Victor Abreu had a laptop, an iPhone 6S, credit cards bearing different names, nearly 100 gift cards, three female-style wallets and a plastic bag that contained various receipts and a personal check in someone else’s name, the chief said.
Borough police contacted some of the owners to return their valuables and were trying to call the rest, he said.
They gave Abreu a summons for a Jan. 23 appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack and turned him over to Fair Lawn police.
Fair Lawn police charged Abreu with two counts of theft and released him pending a court hearing.
The laptop was taken from a car parked outside Maple Avenue Bagels and other items from a vehicle parked at the Lukoil/Dunkin Donuts on Route 208, Fair Lawn Sgt. Brian Metzler said.
