YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A personal trainer from Mahwah has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident in which a man was struck after he tried to stop her car because she appeared to be drinking with a child aboard, Ridgewood police confirmed this morning.

The driver, Stefanie Pennachio, 41, also was charged with reckless driving and failing to report an accident, Ridgewood Detective Chris McDowell.

Several good Samaritans told police that they saw Pennachio “discarding a bottle of alcohol into a trash can while she was parked at Exxon on the Run” on Route 17 south just after 5:30 p.m. Monday, McDowell told CLIFFVIEW PILOT in a story published Tuesday morning.

Two of them “believed she was intoxicated and attempted to stop her,” he said.

“She backed out and struck one of the people attempting to stop her,” then kept going, the detective said.

The 53-year-old man she struck with her car sustained a minor injury to his hip but refused medical treatment, McDowell said.

He and the others supplied valuable information to police, who prepared charges against Pennachio, found her and served her with the summonses, he said.
