A patrol sergeant recognized Kevin A. Almodovar, 21, from surveillance video on Tuesday after the abortive weekend robbery.

An employee at the Main Street store told responding officers jthat the 20-something robber was wearing a dark colored Carhart jacket, dark colored hoodie and red winter-style hat, carrying a tan and orange backpack when he entered the store around 6:30 p.m. Saturday brandishing a large kitchen knife and demanding money.

"Proceeds were nothing," Detective Lt. Joseph Rella said. "He actually left a dollar on the counter, apparently for the donut."

Surveillance video helped identify Almodovar, who was known to police, and detectives arrested him Tuesday, the lieutenant said.

Almodovar remained held Wednesday in the Bergen County Jail pending a detention hearing on charges of robbery and possession of both a weapon and a small amount of marijuana.
