The woman eventually came to after losing her balance and hitting her head on the ground when she tried to climb into the driver's side of the moving vehicle, Lt. Michael Blondin told Daily Voice.

Her condition was improving Sunday afternoon at Hackensack Unviersity Medical Center, he said.

Her son wasn't injured.

"We don't exactly know yet why the car started rolling," Blondin told Daily Voice.

The driver's side door was open as the vehicle began rolling backward down the incline on Judith Ann Court, a cul-de-sac off Airmount Road, around 11 a.m., the lieutenant said.

The woman tried climbing into the SUV but lost her balance and "was catapulted" to the ground as it gained momentum, he said.

The vehicle came to a stop in the middle of the street.

Responders who found her unconscious initially called for AirMed One to fly the victim to the hospital but decided to take her by ambulance rather than wait, given the light Sunday morning traffic, after she came to.
