Authorities: Sucker Punch Kills Paterson Bar Patron

PATERSON, N.J. – An 53-year-old Elizabeth man was killed with one punch in a Paterson barroom dispute, said authorities who charged his assailant with reckless manslaughter.

Agustin D. Arias-Gomez hit his head on the floor after 34-year-old Luis Martinez sucker-punched him in the face during a brief argument Sunday night at J&G Lounge & Liquors on Park Avenue, authorities said.

Arias-Gomez was taken to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson, where he was pronounced dead the next day, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Deputy Chief Heriberto Rodriguez said in a joint release Wednesday.

Martinez remained held in the Passaic County Jail pending a court appearance Wednesday in Paterson.
