Susan M. Sargen, 73, Formerly Of Ridgewood

RIDGEWOOD, N.J. -- Susan (nee Savage) Sargen, 73, has died.

She was born in 1943 in Reno Nev. and lived there through high school.

She entered Stanford University in 1961 and earned an undergraduate degree in mathematics four years later. In 1965, she was one of two women accepted into Stanford’s Ph.D. program in economics, where she received a master’s degree and completed all requirements for a Ph.D.

While at graduate school, she met her future husband, Nick.

Sargen began her professional career in 1971. Her first two jobs included research positions with the Department of Health, Education and Welfare and with Stanford Research Institute.

In 1978, the family moved to Ridgewood with their two sons, and she accepted a consulting position with the Educational Testing Service in Princeton. When she gave birth to twin boys in 1979, she suspended her career to raise her family. She was a devoted mother, and each son went on to earn degrees in economics and mathematics at prominent universities.

As her sons became self-sufficient, she redirected her life to volunteer work supporting people in need. She played an important role in the food bank program in Paterson for many years. he also was involved in St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church in Ridgewood, where she served on the vestry.

In 2003, she moved to Cincinnati, when her husband became chief investment officer for the Western & Southern Financial Group. They were in the process of transitioning to Keswick VA, where they had built their retirement home, when she was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer.

Her funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Episcopal Church, 169 Fairmont Road, Ridgewood,, where she will be interred in the church garden she helped design.

She is survived by her husband and their four sons, Daniel (Sarah), Peter (Dayna), Timothy (Jennie) and Paul (Shannon Pan); and five grandchildren; Ian, Catherine, Lauren, Craig, Edward and a sixth due in August.
