BERGEN COUNTY, N.J. — Almost 17 years after a freak accident that left her wheelchair-bound, Bergenfield's Lauren LaPorta is building strength to walk on her own again.

That story and several more, including a luxury car dealer pocketing big bucks and a story on a Ridgefield Park pizzeria, topped Bergen County news last week.

ONE STEP AT A TIME: Bergenfield High School counselor Lauren LaPorta is inspiring her students to follow their dreams as she is doing just that. At 28 years old, LaPorta is relearning to walk, 17 years after a freak accident left her wheelchair-bound.

LITTLE FERRY FIRE: A resident was killed in a Little Ferry house fire Wednesday morning while his family was away on vacation, authorities said.

PIECE UH PIZZA : Pizzerias are scattered across all of New Jersey, but a neighborhood pizza place like Dante's in Ridgefield Park can become a part of a town the longer it's around for. Dante's Owner Danny Lita knows how a local pizza place can contribute to a sense of community.

ROCHELLE PARK RAID: Rochelle Park police early Friday raided a local hotel room and busted a trio of accused identity thieves who they said had more than a dozen iPhones, bogus credit cards and driver's licenses -- and $57,000 in cash.
