BERGEN COUNTY, N.J. -- New Jersey commuters pay the highest tolls in the country, with the behemoth New Jersey Turnpike Authority gobbling up the biggest piece of the pie at about $1.4 billion a year, according to The Statistics Portal, statistica.com.

The New Jersey Turnpike is 122 miles long, and is the highest-earning toll generator in the country. The turnpike authority collects more revenue than any U.S. toll agency.

Tolls paid by drivers in the New York tri-state area account for nearly one-third of all the tolls paid in the United States every year, or more than $4 billion, statistica.com said.

The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey comes second in annual toll revenue, collecting from commuters about $1.3 billion, said statistica.com, an Internet site that analyzes numbers.

MTA Bridges and Tunnels are third nationally with annual toll revenue of about $1.2 billion.

Coming in fourth is the the Illinois Tollway at about $943 million.

There are 5,932 miles of toll roads in the United States and 35 states or territories have at least one toll road, tunnel or bridge, according to statistica.com. America’s toll agencies collect about $13 billion in revenue every year, the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association reports, with most of the money going to pay for the cost of maintaining the infrastructure. The money makes up the difference in actual costs and the amount provided by federal and state fuel taxes.
