The 6-0 vote with one abstention came after council members said Laforet went against township legal advice and spoke to the media about a “no-knock” ordinance, the story says.

The “no-knock” ordinance, passed Thursday, will establish a registry of homes off-limits to solicitors, the story says. The measure comes amidst a conflict between Mahwah residents and communities of ultra-Orthodox Jews across the border in New York, the story says.

Council members contend that the mayor put the township in a negative light by publicly suggesting the township hold off on the measure while the Office of the Attorney General continues its investigation into the township, the story says. The office is investigating Mahwah for potential discrimination for attempting to ban non-residents from local parks, the story says.
