Grant Nets Mahwah Firefighters Practice Dummies, Forcible Door

MAHWAH, N.J. — Mahwah firefighters added a state-of-the art forcible-entry door system and two life-like practice dummies for rescue exercises, thanks to nearly $8,000 granted by a local insurance firm.

"The equipment is always something that the Mahwah Fire Department has wanted," Chief Tom Loreto said. "We are a very proactive department and put a lot of time into training."

The entry door made possible by the Capacity Coverage grant will allow firemen to practice forcing or prying their way into just about any situation possible, Loreto said.

The rescue mannequins — one child and one 165-pound adult — will allow firemen to practice searching for victims and removing them from buildings or extricating them from vehicles, he said.

The new equipment will rotate regularly throughout the department's fire companies.

"Both the forcible entry door and the rescue mannequins," Loreto says, "will allow us to better prepare ourselves for any real life situation that we maybe faced with."
