Could Court Tax Ruling Affect Ridgewood's The Valley Hospital?

HACKENSACK, N.J. -- Hackensack, Englewood, Teaneck and Ridgewood are examining their options to collect taxes from non-profit hospitals following a landmark decision by state courts to apply property tax to Morristown Medical Center, Njspotlight.com reports.

HUMC in Hackensack and Westwood is one of several hospitals in Bergen County that could be required to make tax or service payments to their host communities after a court ruling.

Those getting a closer look could include Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack and Westwood, Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, Holy Name Medical Center and The Valley Hospital, the report says.

The hospitals and their advocates are lobbying the Legislature to enact laws protecting them from taxes, Njspotlight.com reports.

The judge in the Morristown decision ruled that the nonprofit hospital was no longer the charitable organization it was when it was exempted from property taxes, the reports says.

Based on trial evidence, he said, nearly all of the hospital was taxable because for-profit services and finances were intermingled with non-profit functions, according to the report.
