Bergen County Holds Free Narcan Training

BERGEN COUNTY, N.J. -- Bergen County Department of Health’s Office of Alcohol and Drug Dependence (OADD) hosted the County’s first free public training on the proper administration of the life-saving drug Narcan for heroin and opioid overdose in Hackensack recently.

The Center for Addiction Recovery Education and Success (CARES), a Morris-county based non-profit agency, administered the training to a standing room-only crowd and provided free doses of Narcan to the first 15 registrants.

“The heroin and opioid addiction epidemic in Bergen County affects us all, regardless of what town we are from, socioeconomic status, or age,” Freeholder Vice-Chairwoman Tracy Zur said in a statement. “Everyone knows someone that has been touched by the disease of addiction. Seeing so many people at last night’s training shows that the public wants to be involved in helping solve this problem. It takes a village—or in this case a county. I’d like to thank CARES and OADD for putting this together and for constantly working to find new ways to tackle this issue.”

The training was part of a larger Bergen County initiative to educate the general public in the proper administration of Narcan.

The Department of Health OADD plans additional trainings in the future, with their next session scheduled in April.
