WESTWOOD, N.J. — When Westwood's Donna Meier's husband was suffering from cancer, CancerCare was there for her.

She went to counseling and joined a support group out of the organization's Ridgewood office that continues to buoy her, even after her husband's death.

Meier will speak at the CancerCare Walk/Run for Hope in Paramus on Sept. 25 about her experience.

“The group has been such a blessing,” she said. “We were people who didn’t know each other who were brought together in a horrible situation, but one where we all needed each other and could support each other.

"We’ll be in each other’s lives forever, and CancerCare brought us together.”

This year, in the spirit of giving back, the group will walk together at the event on Team Tomorrow’s Hopefuls.

The series of family-friendly 5K events raise funds to support CancerCare’s free, professional services provided to anyone affected by cancer.

It is intended to unite friends and families to walk or run in memory of those they have lost to cancer, honor survivors and support those who are currently facing a cancer diagnosis.

“We are grateful to our committee and the many volunteers for their support over the years," said Kathy Nugent, director of regional programs at CancerCare.
