RIDGEWOOD, N.J. -- Happy birthday to Ridgewood's Bill Geist!
Born May 10, 1945, in Champaign, Ill., Geist turns 72 years old Wednesday.
The author and journalist began his career as a photographer with the First Infantry Division in Vietnam, earning a Bronze Star.
After working at the Chicago Tribune's suburban subsidiary until 1980, he became a New York Times columnist.
Geist left the New York Times to be a correspondent for CBS News in 1987, contributing to a variety of programs, including CBS Evening News and CBS Sunday Morning.
A multiple-time best-selling author and Emmy Award winner, Geist received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2005.
His two children also work in journalism, with son, Willie Geist serving as an anchor and correspondent for NBC News and daughter, Libby Geist Wildes earning two Peabody Awards for her work as a documentary film producer for ESPN.
