RIDGEWOOD, N.J. -- Jerry DeMarco, the new managing editor of the Daily Voice for Bergen and Passaic counties, launched
in mid-2009 after 28 years in newspapers, creating a local independent site that covers breaking news throughout Bergen County as it happens.
Raised in Hudson County, DeMarco has covered local, county and state police, as well as the FBI, ATF and other federal agencies while on assignment in the U.S. District courts for New Jersey & New York.
He also covered a city hall and a statehouse, school districts, planning boards and social service agencies.
"Too often I've seen media types and public servants stake out adversarial positions when an honest conversation could have done the trick," he said. "Daily Voice completely understands that.
"Just about everyone who deals me knows that we begin with mutually accepted ground rules, that we then work toward getting me the story (first, of course), and that we make sure to protect the integrity not only of the source but of the material itself," he said. "I expect my staff to build that same trust."
DeMarco has won national recognition for his investigative work, including Clarion, Heywood Broun and Deadline Club awards. He's changed public policy and managed several major projects -- including one that helped put a corrupt public official in federal prison and another that forced a sitting New Jersey attorney general from office for her participation in a Bergen County traffic stop involving her boyfriend.
DeMarco regularly lectures at a graduate course in media relations at Fairleigh Dickinson University and previously was an adjunct professor at Lehman College in the Bronx.
He's also written about popular music for more than 30 years -- one of his passions -- as well as humor pieces.
“The idea that I can bring that orientation to a complete local community news operation is a dream come true," DeMarco said. "Daily Voice in Bergen and Passaic counties can easily be what it is so far elsewhere -- indispensable."
Founded in 2010, Daily Voice is the largest news medium in Westchester and Fairfield counties.
