Allendale Firefighters Aid Colleague Who Lost Home In Mahwah Condo Blaze

ALLENDALE, N.J. — Allendale Firefighter Stephen Brown had been living in his Mahwah condo only three weeks before a Feb. 2 fire destroyed it and all its contents.

Now friends, colleagues and strangers are rushing to his aid.

The Allendale Fire Department is holding a fundraiser at the Allendale Bar & Grill at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Gift cards also are being accepted at the restaurant all day.

"Firemen show up at people's worst hours," Brown, 22, told Daily Voice, "so it was weird having the roles reversed."

He was watching television in his living room with his girlfriend, Brown said, when he noticed flames on the floor above him.

He immediately began knocking on his Society Hill neighbors' doors — and helped a pregnant woman escape along with her two cats.

"I'm so thankful to have all of my brothers and sisters in the fire department there helping us," said Brown, who has been staying at the Sheraton on Route 17. "The departments who responded probably didn't know I was there, but they did an excellent job putting it out.

"Everyone was very comforting," he said.
