The Healthcare Heroes awards program honors individuals and organizations making a significant impact on the quality of healthcare in New Jersey.

The Healthcare Professional of the Year Award honors individuals such as administrators, researchers, technicians and professors, who are making a difference in healthcare. Kristen Silberstein was nominated by Valley’s leadership, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to advocating for patients’ rights, working above and beyond her job responsibilities to ensure patients, both at Valley and across the state, have sufficient access to healthcare services.

As New Jersey has seen a flurry of legislative action on health insurance networks and providing patients with transparent coverage, Kristen Silberstein has emerged as an industry leader in the managed care field. Kristen has testified as a key expert, sharing her in-depth knowledge with state representatives and health system Chief Executive Officers, and has been instrumental in working with state legislators on finding solutions to protect patients from large surprise medical bills.

In addition, Kristen closely collaborates with the Valley’s leaders to ensure that the hospital’s contractual agreements give patients the best possible options for evidence-based quality outcomes.

“Kristen not only feels passionately about doing the right thing for each and every patient, she actively fights for it,” says Rich Keenan, Chief Financial Officer and Senior Vice President of Finance at The Valley Hospital. “She scrutinizes contracts, negotiates with payers, and works closely with administration and physicians to ensure the best quality, cost, and satisfaction for our patients.”

Healthcare Heroes awards finalists were chosen by an independent panel of judges. The finalists will be recognized and the winners in each category will be announced during a breakfast awards ceremony on June 21, 2016 at the Palace in Somerset Park in Somerset, N.J.
