RIDGEWOOD, N.J. -- Valley Hospital in Ridgewood is one of only three hospitals in New Jersey to receive a four-star rating for excellence in patient experience.
The star ratings were included in the latest release of the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey, published by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS).
The HCAHPS survey evaluates patient experiences in a variety of areas ranging from cleanliness to doctor communication to staff responsiveness. The star ratings, which rank hospitals from 1 to 5, are intended to make it easier for consumers to choose a hospital and understand the quality of care they deliver, according to the CMS.
With four stars — the highest rating accorded to any New Jersey hospital — Valley stands among the top 5 percent in the state.
Nationwide, of the 3,542 hospitals that were rated, only 4 percent were awarded five stars; 33 percent were award four stars; 43 percent were awarded three stars; 18 percent were awarded two stars and 2 percent were awarded one star.
