RIDGEWOOD, N.J. — Ridgewood residents started setting out chairs along the Fourth of July Parade route on North Maple Avenue as early as this weekend.

The placing of chairs of all colors and styles is a village tradition dating back at least 50 years.

For the most part, police say, no one takes or disturbs them.

“There are no rules regarding the chairs,” said Lt. Todd Harris. “There’s no specific ordinance that bans people from doing it or tells them how they must do it.”

Many people tie their chairs together, he said, but that’s mainly to keep them together for a group, not to prevent theft.

“You’re putting them on a public street,” Harris said. “How much protection can you expect?”

Though there have been reports of a chair or two occasionally taken, for the most part, the honor system works.

Some people write their names on their chairs, Harris added.

By July 3, most of the route for this year’s 106th annual Ridgewood Fourth of July Parade will be thoroughly lined with chairs.

The theme of this year’s parade, which starts at 10 a.m. July 4, is “America the Beautiful – Celebrating 100 Years of our National Parks.”
