RIDGEWOOD, N.J. -- The Ridgewood Health Department is offering residents an annual free dog rabies clinic on Wednesday, May 11 -- and rabies vaccinations are required to get the required dog license.

Dogs must be accompanied by an adult and leashed or in a carrier.

New Jersey law requires owners of all dogs seven months old and older to be registered with the town they live in. To get a license, the owner must present proof that a licensed vet has vaccinated the dog against rabies, and that vaccination is good until May 1, 2017.

To receive the discount for a spayed or neutered pet, proof must also be provided.

Dog license renewals are due in June, Supervisor of Health Dawn Cetrulo said, and a $20 late fee will be charged for renewals received after June 30. The health department will be sending renewal applications via email. Alternately:

  • if you do not have an email address, call its office -- at 201-670-5500, ext 503 -- to request a renewal by mailed to you;
  • you can get a renewal applications online; or
  • you can pick one up at the Ridgewood Health Department, 131 North Maple Ave.

The department's office hours are Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

In conjunction with the rabies clinic, the Responsible Pet Ownership Committee will also be facilitating free microchip implantation and registration to the first 75 dogs at the clinic.

The clinic will be from 6-7 p.m. at the Recycling Center on Glen Avenue.
