Certified martial arts instructor Dave Howell -- who's taught kids for over 14 years -- is leading the classes. Taekwondo is one of only two martial arts in the Olympics. Founded in Korea, it has gained huge popularity in recent years in the U.S.

The classes will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from Tuesday, June 28, through Thursday, Aug. 18. For kids from 5 to 8, sessions will run from 5:15-6 p.m., and for those from 9 to 14, sessions will be from 6:15-7 p.m.

Students will learn patterns, sparring and self-defense, as well as improve physical fitness and mental discipline. Howell is a lifetime student of Taekwondo. In his years of instruction, he's had over 100 students promoted to black belt. In 2012, he coached a student to gold-place finish in their first International forms competition in Seoul, Korea.

These classes will be held at the YWCA's 112 Oak St. facility, in Ridgewood. You can register online or call the Membership Department at 201-444-5600, ext. 400, for details and class schedules.
