RIDGEWOOD, N.J. — Apple season is finally here and Kilwins has tons to choose from -- as long as you don’t mind that they’re covered in caramel and candy.
The old-fashioned candy store on East Ridgewood Avenue celebrated its first anniversary in New Jersey last month.
“Most Kilwin stores are in what I call ‘tourist locations,’ tied to water,” store owner Phillip Davis said. “It’s very much a seaside kind of thing. I wanted to take it off the beach because that would be a point of difference.”
Kilwins operates on a three-part business model, selling 32 flavors of ice cream, homemade fudge and chocolate, and candy apples -- with each taking prominence depending on the season.
“During holidays, chocolate goes through the roof,” Davis said. “In the fall we can’t keep the apples in stock.”
Amblers at any time of year can sample store-made fudge outside while watching products being made in the window, as Kilwin’s exhaust fan cranks out chocolaty aromas from the candy laboratory.
“There’s very much a Disney mentality,” said Davis, whose staff is constantly dunking apples, swirling chocolate or scooping ice cream. “We want to get people excited with all their senses.”
"It's chocolate and ice cream," Davis said. "It better be fun. If it isn't, it falls flat."
